Panto by Slim Palmer

January 22, 2009

And now for something completely different: Panto, a most readable, interesting and amusing book by Slim Palmer.

To start with, the cover is brilliant. The colours – red and gold – glow against an almost solid black background.

Okay, interest is arouse, so what do we find on the first pages? An introduction into the world of the theatre — terms used and stage plan. Then comes a short script. One of the things we (that is my hubby who reads to me, as well as myself) found of considerable interest was the technical side of theatre productions — props and out of sight equipment that make a panto, or any other show, work for the audience. So too, the ‘behind the scene’ characters that allow the magic to work for ‘on stage’ performers.

The story itself has another kind of magic involving ghoulies and spectres, both from ancient times and the recent past. Characters are memorable, dialogue credible, storyline intriguing and drawing the reader onwards to experience the conclusion. Not a book to put back on the shelf forgotten!
